The importance of becoming a Living Wage employer

Published: December 2, 2021

We are thrilled to announce that Southernsbroadstock are now officially Living Wage accredited employers.

The Living Wage is the only rate in the UK that is voluntarily paid by businesses to ensure staff have the financial security to meet their day-to-day needs. Research shows it can have a tremendously positive effect on workers and businesses alike.

Our Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at the company receive a minimum hourly wage of £9.90 in the UK or £11.05 in London. Both rates are significantly higher than the government minimum for over 23s, which currently stands at £8.91 per hour.

For staff, it provides substantial peace of mind. It can mean parents can spend more time with children without taking on extra hours of work. Or it can make the difference between being able to afford bills without sacrificing other essentials.

This investment in staff also has the power to enrich businesses because when staff feel valued, they feel more integrated into the business as a whole. A good wage means attracting and retaining the best talent, which also cultivates staff with a greater depth of knowledge, eliminating the need for repeated training.

Benefits aside, there are also the moral implications of the Living Wage. Southernsbroadstock have always aimed to boost the wellbeing of staff and give them the tools they need to excel. We felt that becoming an official Living Wage employer was the right thing to do for our team, especially given that post-pandemic conditions have created an undercurrent of uncertainty. Southernsbroadstock wanted to go the extra mile to provide financial security and push back against exploitative cultures that force people to work for less out of necessity.

We are proud to be championing the Living Wage to support our local communities and hope to encourage other employers in our field to embrace its two-way benefits.
