UPD Conference 2022.

At the University Property Development Conference 2022, we brought the topic of Inclusive Design to the table
– a subject rapidly coming to the fore within the Higher Education sector.

But while it is a highly important discussion to have, it can present a daunting prospect for organisations looking to action positive change. The scope is vast and can leave estate planners and specifiers with a lack of direction when responding to such an open-ended design brief.

Our talk – Inclusive Environments: Enhancing Student Experience – was developed to act as an accessible primer for Higher Education stakeholders, especially for those unfamiliar with the subject matter and the good news is that inclusivity can be achieved through a number of simple design choices, including the adoption of strategic furniture and equipment solutions.

Furniture and equipment remains the element linking “people” with “place”. By embedding inclusivity from design stage zero, we can ensure environments are welcoming to all, creating interiors that promote dignity, equity and empathy. Providing individuals with the same equipment is no guarantee they will have the same opportunities. A more mindful approach is required to select furniture and equipment that is flexible enough to meet the needs of the widest range of people.

Southernsbroadstock are experts in designing inclusive interiors that encourage diversity. Our dedicated Higher Education team draw from a wealth of experience to unlock the full potential of your campus. We understand that accessibility is so much more than a design requirement. It allows universities to adapt to modern learning styles, to uplift their staff and students, and to respond to social movements with confidence. Inclusivity is a core value held by Generation Z, it is essential that universities and organisations respond in kind.

For more insight into this fascinating subject, our speaker Lee Hansford will be presenting his “Exploring Inclusive Environments” webinar on 10th January in partnership with the NEUPC framework. Lee will also be presenting further quarterly webinars discussing a range of topics with insight into the Higher Education sector.
